Our Changing Landscape (4th Jan 2010)
All my life the southern end of the Hapuka Estuary has been one of the most beautiful, peaceful and tranquil places on earth. It was a place of crystal clear reflections and wonderful light playing on the bull rushes growing around the edges.
This picture was taken in April 2008 and during that year the river broke through right at this point. Severe storms over the last few weeks have seen the mouth of the river move further south and the sea is now destroying this beautiful sanctuary, every tide causing more erosion and the salt water killing plant life.
When time allows I will photograph the damage being caused.
